This short video, recorded in May and June 2024 in Tunis, is an exploration of the delicate balance between distance and intimacy. My footage captures not only the vibrant artistic practices of the city but also the lingering ache of an outsider’s gaze – a perspective marked by both observation and inherent separation.
Deeply influenced by the tumultuous political climate of the time, particularly the genocide unfolding in Gaza, this video confronts the viewer with a raw awareness of global suffering. The political unrest serves as a constant, unsettling background, infusing the piece with a sense of urgency and a reminder that art, in its incomplete accessibility, can be as conflicted and fractured as the world we navigate.
The editing, enriched by Shokouh Moghimi’s poetic sensibilities, reflects this nuanced tension. The work deliberately refrains from offering a fully accessible narrative, mirroring my own limited entry into a field that remains partly elusive.
