collectivize (culture)
mapping collaborative practices in arts and culture

The collectivize (Culture) project explores the organizational structures that sustain collective art practices, focusing on case studies of collectives in Cairo and Tunis. While much of the discourse around collectivity in the arts centers on aesthetics and conceptual frameworks, this research shifts the focus to the often-overlooked infrastructures that support such practices. Through interviews with 15 collectives, the team uncovers key insights, including the importance of collective care, resource distribution, and the need for a new terminology to describe these practices. Led by an interdisciplinary team with expertise in cultural theory, art practices, music and cultural policy, the project’s findings will be shared through a research article and a digital platform, collectivize.org. This platform will serve as an open-access space for artist collectives globally to share experiences, collaborate, and strengthen the global commons in the arts.
